Painful sex is NOT normal

Painful vaginal intercourse, medically known as dyspareunia, is never normal and highly treatable. It can stem from physical, hormonal, or emotional issues. Pinpointing whether the pain occurs upon entry (superficial) or during deep penetration can help identify the underlying cause and determine the appropriate path forward.

Common Causes

Superficial (At Entry):

Vaginal Dryness: Often linked to a lack of foreplay, medications (like antihistamines), or hormonal drops due to menopause, postpartum recovery, or breastfeeding.

Vaginismus: Involuntary muscle spasms or contractions of the pelvic floor that make penetration difficult or painful.

Infections or Skin Conditions: Yeast infections, STIs, eczema, or inflammation like lichen sclerosus.

Deep (During Thrusting):

Pelvic Conditions: Endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), uterine fibroids, or ovarian cysts can cause significant deep pain.

Scarring: Previous pelvic surgeries, radiation, or complications from episiotomies during childbirth.

Emotional Factors: Stress, anxiety, or past trauma can manifest physically as pelvic tension or pain during intercourse.
